I love this pattern because you can use this with charm packs that you don't quite know what to do with them. In fact you can do this with many size squares. The quilt shown is about a crib size.
This is how I put this together ; a short tutorial.
Gather your supplies.
- You will need one charm pack of the 5 inch squares.
- For the Background I purchased 2 yards.
- a yard for binding and about 2 1/2 yrs for the backing.
I always buy more backing because when you go to quilt, you want extra beyond the top when you sandwich, this will serve as the testing ground for thread tension.
If you have someone quilt for you, they want this extra beyond your quilt top.
- Choose a light to medium weight batting. I prefer cotton / poly blend.
- When quilting , I like to blend my thread color with the background color of the quilt. Here I used white 30 wt. 3 ply thread. Superior is my choice of thread.
Take 10 of the the 5 inch square and cut them into 2 1/2 inch squares.
Cut the plain background squares pair up with the other 5 inch charm squares.
Sew these together like shown below. Later you will be bordering the whole quilt with the background with a 2 1/2 inch sashing. This will frame the squares on the outside edge.
We are now going to make the next floating block.
Cut 2 1/2 background squares. Each patterned square will have two background squares attached , one to bottom and one to the top. Next you will need to cut the side pieces. Cut a 5 inch block in half and sew each piece to either side of the center sewn sections.
After squaring up the blocks to 5 inches, you can now sew a background square to each block as you did before in the first row of 5 inch blocks.
Your almost done.
Sew the rows together. One row of big blocks and the next row the floater block pieces.
when done just add the 2 1/2 background on all four sides.
Sandwich your backing, batting and your top. Quilt and put on a small binding of contrasting color.
I chose an overall quilting pattern to stitch on this quilt.
That's it!.
This work up fairly fast. Great pattern for quick sewing and cutting. This one is going to a fall function raffle.
